Introduction / History

The Maroy are a small indigenous subgroup associated with the So Makon peoples of southern Laos and belong to the broader Mon-Khmer cultural family. Their communities developed in rural areas where village identity, kinship ties, and traditional customs shaped daily life over generations. They speak the So language.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Maroy generally live in village communities and depend on agriculture and local subsistence activities. Work often centers on farming, gathering, and caring for household animals. Family relationships are important, with extended relatives frequently sharing responsibilities and preserving traditions. Community celebrations are tied to agricultural seasons, family milestones, and local customs. Meals commonly include rice with vegetables, gathered foods, and locally available meats.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Maroy have historically practiced ethnic religion rooted in animistic beliefs. Spiritual life commonly includes respect for ancestral traditions and concern for unseen spiritual forces that influence health, harvest, and community well-being. Some Christian witness is present, but traditional beliefs continue to shape worldview and daily practice.

What Are Their Needs?

Greater access to education, economic opportunity, and healthcare could strengthen long-term community well-being. Continued availability of scripture, discipleship resources, and culturally meaningful Christian fellowship would help support those exploring or following Christ. Local believers would benefit from encouragement and opportunities to mature and participate in gospel ministry.

Prayer Items

Pray for wisdom, health, and provision for Maroy families and village leaders.
Pray that believers among them would grow in biblical understanding and become a witness within their own communities.
Pray asking God to provide faithful workers, open hearts to the message of Christ, become Christ-bearers to the unreached in Laos.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the complete Bible, outreach materials, and discipleship resources in the So language.
